Music for the Liturgy acts to serve the needs of the Liturgy, and therefore must be carefully chosen and prepared.
Roles
Keyboardists (Organists / Pianists) select, prepare, and lead the music for weekend liturgies and other solemnities, working with a cantor or choir as needed. They must be competent with their instrument and maintain awareness of Catholic theology, Liturgy, and liturgical music. Our liturgical musicians work together to maintain a cohesive liturgical experience for our congregation.
Cantors lead the congregation in singing when no choir is present. They must be competent in vocal technique and understand their role within the liturgy.
Choir members participate occasionally as appropriate in Sunday Liturgies, higher solemnities in particular. Serving as a choir member is an ideal opportunity for prospective cantors and keyboardists to begin formation in understanding the role of the music within the Liturgy.
Additional Instrumentalists competent with specific string, woodwind, or brass instruments may be utilized in special liturgies throughout the year.
*Training is available in vocal technique, basic organ technique, and the role of music within the Liturgy.*
Choirs
10:00 Mass Choir: The 10:00 mass is considered a “high mass”. This simply means that it is a more formal and traditional liturgy. Our 10:00 Choir welcomes singers from 6th grade thru adult. We sing a range of sacred music in English and in Latin, as well as motets and polyphony appropriate to the liturgical season.
Opus Patris: In addition, on the last Sunday of every month, the music for the 10:00 liturgy is provided by Opus Patris (a father’s work). This is a men’s choir, open to men from high school thru adult.
CCD Choir: Finally, the CCD youth choir is open to CCD students who would like to offer their gift of music during the monthly CCD mass on the first Wednesday of every month.
